several of our members have done speeches on taking better care of the earth; it is a re-occuring theme. the idea of adopting a green initiative as a club was received at the december 3rd meeting. so join me in brainstorming in ways we can move forward with this as a club project…
my initial ideas
- having several members ready to speak on the topic
- making the community aware that we are willing to present to groups
- have a non-word of the day contest to come up with a name for our green initiative
- post ideas on how we can be more green on a section of our website – ideas, reminders, etc.
- take on a ‘hands on’ project, like adopt a highway or similar
- encourage reuse of stuff -vs- filling the land fills; make people more aware of sharing websites

I help people with their computer issues and would enjoy learning more about how people can take a more green approach to their computer usage. What to look for when purchasing new computers, how to properly recycle old computer equipment, and various ways to minimize their footprint when using their computers. I will love to place this information on my web site.
Any information you may have would be appreciated.

I especially like your last idea of encouraging reuse of stuff. It’s easy to forget the order of the “reduce-reuse-recycle” mantra, but reusing is WAY better than recycling and reducing is WAY better than reusing. I was looking at our agendas today–would it be possible to reprint the next week’s schedule on the back of the current schedule? Since I’m a bit new, I’m not sure who does the schedules–is it the Toastmaster of the day? Or heeding this posting, maybe we can eliminate the paper schedules altogether and just post the schedule on the board? Could that work, or are people using the paper schedules in a away I haven’t noticed. Sorry Jon, I know you just sent out the xls of the schedule last night.

I see…. It’s funny, my Dad and I were just talking about Hybrid cars yesterday. He is saying that the price of gas being high is a good thing because it gives an economic incentive to further alternative energy sources. Can’t argue with that. I think anything that raises awareness with out being illogical or irrational is a good thing.
Now step one is too get all club members to denounce and sell their SUVs and get hybrid cars.
